Dark circles under the eyes are an extremely common and distressing issue.  In fact, 9 out of 10 people have dark circles under their eyes at one time or another, so it's no wonder that dark bags of skin below the eyes are a common beauty complaint.  Dark circles make you look older, tired, stressed, sick, depressed and just plain bad.

What exactly is the dark circles under the eyes?  Dark circles or eye circles are dark blemishes around the eyes.  Dark circles are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age.

Dark circles are believed to frequently be hereditary.  Like varicose veins, dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait.  Heredity is the primary cause of dark circles.  The genes related to dark circles are actually the genes that cause weakened capillaries in the skin around your eyes

In most cases the dark circles under the eyes are blood vessels that can be seen through the skin.    It is believed that lack of mineral iron can cause dark circles as well.  Cardio exercise increases blood circulation and may help the dark circles to disappear.

Dark circles under the eye may also, in fact, be light carbon deposits that result from incomplete protein digestion.  Dark circles may be caused by a deficiency of vitamin K.
Dark circles and puffiness are often attributed to lack of vitamin K or inadequate antioxidants. Dark circles may be caused by inflamed or enlarged veins beneath the skin.

In addition, a variety of factors, both common and uncommon, can influence or cause the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.  Exposure to the sun can exacerbate your dark circles.  So if you notice dark circles after a trip to the beach or the tanning bed, you're not alone.  Do fatigue or lack of sleep cause dark circles.  Lack of sleep makes your skin pale, which emphasizes your dark circles.  Anything else that makes your skin pale, like fatigue or illness, makes your dark circles much more noticeable.  Allergies cause
dark circles in two ways: first, histamine reactions themselves can cause dark smudges to appear under the eyes.  Rubbing the eyes and the skin around the eyes makes dark circles even darker.

Another cause of dark circles under the eyes is not eating a balanced healthy diet. Sometimes changing to a more healthy diet can help to diminish those dark circles.  If your dark circles or puffiness are constant, you may have an undetected food allergy or an allergy to a chemical in your home or workplace.

How do I get rid of these dark circles.  Lucky for us, the latest generation of cosmeceuticals and skin care products can get rid of dark circles under your eyes.  Home remedies for dark circles under the eyes are not as fast and effective as dark circle eye creams.

A few people resort to laser surgery, dermabrasion, face lifts and dermal fillers to get rid of their dark circles.  Although to date, there has been no end-all to curing or reducing dark circles.  There are many home-made ingredients that can help make the dark circles less visible.
